May 23, 2025· 23 min read

Fortnite has roughly 650 million registered users in 2025, with around 1.3 million players every day.

Epic Games’ free-to-play (F2P) 100-person shooter title became a global smash after its release in 2017, permeating the consciousness of even non-gaming audiences.

Several years on, Fortnite’s popularity may have dipped. Here's how the average number of daily users has changed from November 2024 to August 2025:

Month Average Daily Fortnite Players
November 2024 2,210,465
December 2024 2,166,185
January 2025 2,250,647
February 2025 1,350,141
March 2025 1,105,598
April 2025 1,402,331
May 2025 1,048,311
June 2025 1,155,695
July 2025 1,131,221
August 2025 1,312,117

So in the past nine months alone, Fortnite has lost almost 900,000 daily players. But these numbers are constantly fluctuating as new "seasons" and "chapters" are released, and the psychedelic battle royale game remains a cash cow for both publishers and streamers.

In fact, Fortnite remains the fourth-most-played game in the world.

Read on to find out all the latest Fortnite user and growth stats.

How Many People Play Fortnite?

Fortnite became a worldwide phenomenon in a relatively short space of time. Back in August 2017, one month after launch, there were approximately 1 million registered players.

By the end of 2017, this number had increased significantly to 30 million. One month into 2018, that figure had increased by 1.5x to around 45 million.

A little over a year after first launching, Fortnite’s registered players hit 200 million.

As of 2025, there are now approximately 650 million registered Fortnite players. There are more than 800 million accounts across the Epic Games network, which also includes Fall Guys and Rocket League.

On an average day, approximately 1.3 million users play Fortnite.

This figure shot up to over 14 million on November 30, 2024, when Fortnite hosted the "Remix: The Finale" event, a live interactive concert tribute to Juice WRLD.

So far, the peak in 2025 has been 5.9 million, recorded in June. That coincided with the launch of Chapter 6, Season 3, themed around superheroes.

Many Fortnite users play online on their computer or item shop through the Fortnite website. In fact, Fortnite's website attracts 19.3 million monthly visits.

How Does Fortnite Make Money?

As a result of Fortnite’s F2P nature, Epic Games has established several other very profitable revenue streams. The most notable revenue stream is downloadable content (DLC) sales.

The vast majority of Fortnite players have bought some form of DLC.

Of the 1,000 respondents asked in February 2020, 77% claimed they had spent money on in-game purchases for Fortnite (with a further 2% preferring not to answer).

The amount spent on in-game purchases unsurprisingly increased during the first 2 years of the game’s existence.

In its first full year (2018), an average of $84.67 was spent by each Fortnite player.

By 2020, this figure had increased by around 21% to $102.42.

Considering the average price of an AAA title is roughly $60-$70, these DLC sales figures more than compensate for the lack of initial cost.

However, Epic did enter into a $245 million settlement with the FTC in 2023 over deceptive sales practices.

in June 2025, the FTC returned $126 million in refunds to Fortnite players who were charged for unwanted items.

Battle Royale Stats

Fortnite’s genre, known as battle royale, rapidly became one of the most popular in video games across the globe. Yet a recent Newzoo report indicates that the genre is experiencing a decline in popularity.

This might sound surprising given the continued success of Fortnite (and major competitors Warzone, PUBG, and Apex Legends). However, the trend seems more reflective of other games in the genre fading away.

Newzoo's Game Performance Monitor – which uses both official and estimated data from 37 markets – shows that battle royales accounted for 19% of total gaming hours in 2021. That figure dropped to just 12% in 2023 and 2024.

While overall engagement with battle royales has decreased, Fortnite has significantly increased its dominance within the genre.

Its share of battle royale playtime has jumped from 43% in 2021 to 77% in 2024.

This surge aligns with the game's expansion into new modes like Lego Fortnite, Rocket Racing, and Fortnite Festival. These are all hosted within the Fortnite ecosystem but fall outside traditional battle royale gameplay.

  • 7 in 10 Fortnite players play under 10 hours per week.
  • 0-5 hours” was the most common answer.
  • 1 in 20 Fortnite players play over 21+ hours each week.

Unsurprisingly, Fortnite users surge during special events. And Epic Games have taken full advantage of this:
